About the Teacher

David Stoops

David Stoops has been teaching music professionally since 2002 in both private and group formats. Born and raised in Portland, he graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.A. degree and survived seven years in Los Angeles. He takes a patient and song-based approach to teaching, while emphasizing proper technique and fundamentals. In non-Covid times, he performs regularly in venues around the Portland area

David Stoops

"My son has taken guitar lessons with David Stoops for the last three years and I can't say enough about what a good experience it has been. Jamie started as a complete beginner and is now a confident musician. At age 14, this confidence carries over to other areas of his life.

I cannot say enough about Dave as a wonderful, patient , and enthusiastic guitar instructor. He is kind, personable, and has a wonderful personality for working with young people. However, first and foremost, he is a great guitar teacher. My son has learned so much from him and has been instilled with a passion for guitar and music in general. Dave has been flexible with his schedule if we need to change class times . I would recommend him without reservations to anyone interested in learning guitar!

David has remarkable patience and has always been encouraging and positive. He has a good rapport with kids and relates to them at their level, while challenging them to go beyond their comfort zone. David tries to keep it current, finding music that the kids like, while cleaning up lyrics as appropriate; he has always been a good role model. Besides teaching the instrument, David has tried to expose my son to different types of music, song-writing, singing, and music theory. He's also been extremely flexible and willing to work with our schedules when there have been conflicting activities. I highly recommend David as a music instructor.
